Spent most of the last several days watching new DVDs with my husband's family. Favorite quote:

"You're going to assault the battery with nothing more than a block and tackle?"
"Well, it's better than doing nothing and seeing the fleet destroyed! --Hornblower, the New Adventures

In other reflections on the holiday, I remain seriously distressed by my brother's comment that, as a male elementary school teacher in L.A., he is not supposed to hug his 1st grade students, for fear that this will be seen as harassment or abuse. However, the 50/52 female teachers at his school frequently take the kids onto their laps and comfort them when they are crying, and no one raises an eyebrow.

What kind of a world do we live in when children, many of whom don't even have a father, aren't allowed to get hugs and reassurance from one of the only positive male role models in their lives?

Resolutions for the New Year:
1. Hug children.
2. Lose weight by exercising more, and eating less pasta.
3. Spend plenty of time just hanging out with my husband.
4. Don't go insane during January and February, and don't let my projects and insanity interfere with my friendships or my relationship.
5. Inspire students to love Roman history.
6. Write 5 pages a day on my dissertation.
7. Clean up the kitchen, together with my husband, every night.
