Hey, people with Ph.Ds and anyone who knows anything about copyright law,

So, I have to submit a copy of my dissertation to ProQuest for archiving. They offer me the option for $45 of registering an official copyright with them, which will then be registered with the Library of Congress, and mean that if/when I get it published, I have to transfer that copyright to the publisher. They also say, however, that the copyright is basically guaranteed by the page in the dissertation that says Copyright Orichalcum, 2005, All Rights Reserved.

So, is it worth paying this $45? Totally unclear.

Hence, my query.

Also, amusingly, I have to fill out the mandatory Federal Survey of Highly Educated Personnel, because I am now a Valuable Asset To My Country.

Somehow I think they're talking more about the nuclear physicists on this one.
