"It was luxuries like air conditioning that brought down the Roman Empire. With air conditioning their windows were shut, they couldn't hear the barbarians coming." --Garrison Keillor
"But then the Roman Empire fell like this- "oh s--t". And we went into
what the historians called the Stupid F--r period. Where everyone
was going -"er, I dunno. Is that a Roman road? Can we eat it?" Then
there was the dark Ages. " I can't even see you! Where are you?"" --Eddie Izzard
I happened upon these in my search for a new name for my winter course, the one that was called "Speaking Truth to Power" and is currently called "Authors and Emperors: Roman Literature and Imperialism." I'm not terribly happy with either. Any suggestions, creative people?
And yes,
