It's my birthday, and so I get to reflect on the past year.

I did a lot this last year. I wrote a 400-page dissertation, and successfully defended it. I got a job, at least for now. I got my Ph.D. I taught 2 classes as an Assistant Professor. I moved. I got a puppy, and began training her. It's a lot for one year. It'll probably take a while to absorb all the changes. But I'm proud of myself for leaping off those cliffs, and so far, the paragliding seems pretty fun, though like a lot of hard work.

Now I get to watch O Brother Where Art Thou for work, make crepes with my husband for breakfast, open presents, relax, paint glass Christmas ornaments, and then go out for a lovely dinner.

You know, it's really hard to look at these paintings of flowers and not think that elephants are really pretty darn intelligent. Do monkeys even do representational art? And there seems to be pretty good evidence that this is the elephants doing this, not their trainers.

Well, actually more like 30 days, but still. There has been snow covering the ground here, and ice covering the sidewalks, for over a month now. It has gotten old. and cold. I hate having to put on thick gloves and hat and coat and 3-4 layers every time I go outside.

Last night, I had a dream that I was at [livejournal.com profile] havenstone and Fi's wedding in an old Gothic church, and it was very nice and pretty, and right after the ceremony we went next door to the Caribbean beach they had rented for the weekend, which was very nice of them, I thought (particularly in London!) And we relaxed out on the beach and drank floofy drinks and went swimming.

Then I woke up and walked the dog and tried not to fall down.

But all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. Happy Holidays, and a joyous New Year. To a week of fudge and cookies and peanut-butter-stuffed-dates and roasts and potatoes and Morse-Punch and then blintzes and latkes and pies and other fried yummies. Ah, the advantages of mongrelhood.
