Somehow, it seems ironic that on Blog for Choice Day, I happened onto the thread on Chronicle.com where a large number of female academics were discussing their unplanned pregnancies and how they were going to cope with them. I couldn't help but think, "If this many highly educated, presumably pretty intelligent women can't manage to use birth control correctly, no wonder there are a lot of accidents and mistakes among 15-year-olds!" I maintain my belief that abortion is a lousy form of birth control, and that, if you want to be sexually active and not get pregnant, you need to be careful, systematic, and cautious with methods of prevention. At the same time, it's an option that needs to exist - not just for rape victims, but for all the people who need it as a last resort, because they know that they are not ready to have a child.
And at the same time, I am so grateful that my life circumstances have enabled me to have my egregiously cute son at the right time for me and to raise him within a loving and welcoming family. May those of you who want such blessings in your lives gain them at the appropriate time; may those of you who don't enjoy the freedom and extra sleep that I now lack. :)
Mac, btw, is looking ridiculously more and more like his dad.
