Why, do you ask? Because I just found out an update on this story, which apparently was known before, but at least not to me:
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's kids held in secret CIA custody:
"Two young sons of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the September 11 attacks, are being used by the CIA to force their father to talk.
Yousef al-Khalid, nine, and his brother, Abed al-Khalid, seven, were taken into custody in Pakistan in September when intelligence officers raided a flat in Karachi which their father had fled hours earlier. They were found cowering behind a wardrobe with a senior al-Qaeda member.
The boys have been held in Pakistan, but this weekend they were flown to America to be questioned about their father.
CIA interrogators confirmed on Saturday that the boys were staying at a secret address.
"We are handling them with kid gloves. After all, they are only little children," said an official. "But we need to know as much about their father's recent activities as possible. We have child psychologists on hand at all times and they are given the best of care."
Their father, Mohammed, 37, is being interrogated at the Bagram US military base in Afghanistan. He is being held in solitary confinement and subjected to "stress and duress" interrogation."
In April 2007, the father of a prisoner who had been kept at the same location reported on their treatment when they were in Pakistani/U.S. custody: "The Pakistani guards told my son that the boys were kept in a separate area upstairs, and were denied food and water by other guards. They were also mentally tortured by having ants or other creatures put on their legs to scare them and get them to say where their father was hiding."
Apparently, since 2003, they've been held in the CIA secret prisons in Romania, which is why there's been further news on the matter. Just think, if another pro-torture president (like all the Republicans except for McCain and maybe Thompson?) gets elected, we can put the 9-year-old on trial before a military tribunal as an adult in 5 more years!
I don't care, frankly, how bad of a guy Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is. The United States of America ought not to interrogate 7-year-olds or use them as weapons of intimidation against their parents, and anyone who authorized that policy should be impeached and brought up on subsequent criminal charges. Child psychologists on hand? Not comforting. That still implies that they interrogated the _kids._
