Thank you for everyone who is taking hours out of their life and losing much sleep in order to vote today. This shouldn't be the way our system works, but I am grateful to you for your endurance and commitment. Thank you especially to everyone who is out working at the polls today or doing election protection or canvassing in another state; I wish I could help you but I have to teach 16 students from 12 different countries about the importance of international law and moral choices.

Remember that your vote is important even if you don't live in a Presidential swing state. In California, Proposition 8, which bans marriage equality, is still very close. In New York, the State Senate races are very close, and that could determine whether NY is the next state to enact marriage equality. There are tightly contested Senate races all over the country, and board of education races that help determine what our nation's children are being taught.

"Mommy has sticker," Mac said this morning, pointing at my sweater.
"Yes, Mac, it says "I Voted," I replied.
"Vote 'bama?" he asked.
"Yep," I said with pride.
"I want sticker!" he said.
"Not till you're older," I said.
He paused. "I want pumkin cookie!"

Random thoughts:
When you're a director, there's a moment, a few minutes before the first curtain, when you realize that despite all your hard work and management and dedication, things are out of your control now. Once the lights go up, it's up to the actors and the techies, not the director, who have to actually make the play work.

Election Day is like that. Until this evening, Barack, Joe, John, and Sarah are just four people, with one vote each, like everyone else. GOTV can and does help, but mostly, it's time to just turn on the lights and see what happens. There are 200 million of us or so who are the actors and techies, today.

Luckily, the Obama campaign has had a lot of time to rehearse.
