Being draconian pays off! Of my six students who I gave Cs or B-s to on the first paper, four got A-s or B+s on the 2nd paper, and showed wonderful improvement. (We won't talk about the other two.) Sadly, the same is not true for my first-paper A-s or B+s, whose grades on the 2nd paper generally went down. But it's really nice to know that my comments apparently helped and paid off.

I have learned my lesson; next quarter should expect massive harshness on the first assignment. :)
