Since I haven't made a political or religious post in a while...
For those of you who didn't hear, Bishop V. Gene Robinson of the Episcopal Church is going to deliver the opening invocation at the Lincoln Memorial on the first day (Sunday) of inaugural ceremonies for President Obama. Bishop Robinson is the only Episcopal Bishop married to a same-sex partner, Mark Andrew, who has also been invited to front-row seating for all the inaugural events.
Other celebrants on Sunday include: Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles*, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am and Stevie Wonder. Among those reading historical passages will be Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington (who, um, have absolutely nothing in common. Not at all.).
The other religious leader announced today who will participate is the Reverend Sharon Watkins, President of the Disciples of Christ (the Christian Church), who will deliver the sermon at the National Prayer Service on Wednesday. The Disciples are the evangelical cousins of the UCC, as I understand it, more or less, and very liberal, open, and affirming.
So this is cool news, and great recognition for the mainline Episcopal Church. I also hear Bishop Robinson is an awesome speaker.
*Dude! Soul Miner's Daughter hits the big time!
