J.K. Rowling mentioned tonight in a public appearance that Dumbledore is gay.
Furthermore, he was in love with Grindelwald as a young man, which I totally read as subtext when I was reading the book, but assumed was just my naughty imagination.
Admittedly, I'm not totally thrilled with the idea that the only two gay canon characters are Mr. "I selfishly manipulate young kids in service of My Plan" and (possibly) Mr. Magical Hitler. That said, it's nice to have a Wise Old Mentor character who is explicitly homosexual. I know Mckellen has said that he played Gandalf with that intention, but at best that's movie subtext. (It's a pity Grindelwald dies when young, or Mckellen could jump into the last movie, chew the scenery briefly, and join all the other good British actors in the Potterverse. As it is I'm not sure who he'd play. A. thinks that Ewan McGregor would make an awesome Young Dumbledore, though, and I agree.)
