O wisdom of the intarwebs!

If, hypothetically speaking, one's toddler had taken a glue trap, unfolded it, and placed it glue-side down on the carpet in one's rented apartment, and one had managed to get the cardboard off, but there was still a quite sticky residue, untouched by multiple washings and applications of carpet cleaner solution, what should one do next???
