Tariq Ramadan, an eminent Islamic intellectual who had been offered a visiting position at the Kroc Institute for Peace Studies at Notre Dame, has had his visa revoked by the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS claims that they revoked it because of a section of US law affecting people who use a “position of prominence within any country to endorse or espouse terrorist activity” as well as “public safety or national security interests.” Ramadan, a Swiss citizen, is about as close to "moderate intellectual" apparently as one can find among Islamic thinkers and a leader of a reformist school advocating more rights for women in Islam.
[livejournal.com profile] havenstone probably knows more about this than I do, but from what I know, I'm outraged that the DHS is apparently taking the approach these days of Muslim=Evil Terrorist; it's exactly this sort of action which is going to perpetuate the growth of new terrorists and anti-Americanism. Ramadan was strongly criticized on NPR today because he believes that Islam is a superior religion to Judaism and Christianity - I suspect most adherents of any religion believe their own religion to be a superior path to God...
