Letters to voters

Hey folks.

I'm busy today writing both job cover letters and letters to voters in swing states. Some people have expressed interest in knowing how to do this - I'm working through America Coming Together, a Get-Out-The-Vote Movement.
http://acthere.com/modules/letters/homepage.php

Under the cut is my letter - a very targeted, focused version of why I'm voting for John Kerry that has nothing to do with big government/small government or stances on controversial social issues. If you want ideas, feel free to adapt. The second half is just stuff from the ACT sample letter.
Our votes may not count in this election for much, but we can talk to the people whose votes will. And I know all of you are pretty darn eloquent.
Don't forget to vote!

Dear ________,

I’m writing to you to explain why I’m voting for John Kerry on Tuesday, November 2nd, and to ask you, whose vote will determine much more of the election than mine will, to join me.

I live in New York City, and, on September 11th, 2001, I heard the second plane fly over my head, headed for the World Trade Center. On that day and the days that followed, I saw my neighbors in shock and in fear, but I also saw us coming together to help each other as best we could. We were grateful for all the help that came from other cities and states, and for the comfort for those who had lost loved ones.

The hardest burden for New Yorkers to carry over the past 3 years has been the fear of another attack. It has taken me and most of my friends years to be able to see low-flying planes with equanimity, to not panic when the subway stops unexpectedly, or when unspecified vague threats are announced by the government.

I’m voting for John Kerry because George W. Bush has had three years to make me feel safe in my own home and my own country, and he has failed. While hard-working immigrants, international students, and tourists are daily harassed by his customs offices, 95% of crates shipped into our ports go unchecked. Many of the firehouses manned by the brave heroes who gave their lives protecting my city on September 11th have been shut down, and we don’t have anywhere near enough firefighters or police officers to keep us safe. The great miracle of September 11th was that over 10,000 people in the towers were evacuated safely – that was due to the courage of our first responders. George W. Bush has failed to fund, train, or hire the right number of first responders. Even worse, many firefighters and police officers have been back-door drafted into Iraq for indefinite periods of time.
John Kerry has a plan to protect the citizens of our country from further attacks, through careful, coordinated intelligence, increased funding for police and firefighters, and true attention to national security issues. Please vote for him. We can’t trust our safety to George W. Bush anymore.

There are two easy ways to vote so you don’t have to wait in line on November 2nd. Request your absentee ballot today by returning the attached ballot request form to the Washoe County Registrar of Voters:
P.O. Box 11130
Reno, NV 89520
The ballot will then be mailed to you prior to the election. You just choose your candidates then mail it back in -- all from home. You can also vote early starting October 16th -- just go in person to your county clerk's office. Find out where, and how, by calling America Coming Together at 775-337-2555.)
I don't want to take up too much of your time, and I really appreciate that you took the time to read my letter. But this is so important-- and your vote can make all the difference.
Thank you -- and don't forget to vote!
