So, I'm making a Dissertation Mix focusing, for obvious reasons, on prostitutes and songs about sex-money trades. Suggestions are needed; successful suggestions will get a free copy of the mix if desired.

House of Marcus Lycus (Forum)
Roxanne
Lovely Ladies (Les Mis)
Heat is on in Saigon (Miss Saigon)
Hey Big Spender
Material Girl (don't have a copy of, not on Itunes, anyone who can help?)
I Never Do Anything Twice (Sondheim)
Everybody ought to have a maid (Forum)
Sparkling Diamonds (Moulin Rouge)
I wanna be Rich (Calloway)
Whores Hustle and the Hustler's Whore (PJ Harvey)
All you need is love (Moulin Rouge)
Venus (Also need a copy)

No specific genre, though clearly there's a fair amount of musicals...

The D's not about prostitution, it's about hot metal boy lust. And KICKING ASSSSSS!!!!!

Ditto House of the Rising Sun! (It was all I could think of-- alas, someone beat me to it, and I now have nothing worthwhile to contribute.)

"Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" by Tom Waits.
"Pasties & A G-String", also by Tom Waits (if strippers count).
"Do You Love Me? (part 2)" by Nick Cave.
And if you were inclined towards opera, you could always throw in something from La Traviata - it's about a courtesan in 19th century Europe.

An extremely accomplished courtesan, too— she dies of tuberculosis on a high C. Gotta love Verdi... ;-)

How about 'Glitter and Be Gay' from Candide? It's not quite in the same musical genre as the others, but it's all about a woman who's essentially selling herself...

Working for the Man by Pj Harvey (it's rather elliptical, but can be interpreted to describe prostitution)

There are also a whole bunch of early american blues songs about sex sung by women, but these can be hard to find. I have heard of one called "I Ain't Givin' It Away"

Is that the song also known as "Jet Boy, Jet Girl"?

not sure - other great rec. is "Pretty Piece of Flesh" by one inch punch

my only thought is 'A Miller's Son' from A Little Night Music, which is more about giving it up a lot and then (probably) marrying for money. so depending on how loose your definition is... (pun semi-intended)

i have material girl on my computer, if emailing it as a file would help, btw

Strange Kind of Woman (Deep Purple)

I'm sure I know more. That's just the first one off the top of my head.

"Rent" by the Pet Shop Boys

Hmmm. This is not at all in the same genre, but Cole Porter's "Love for Sale". I like the Ella version.

Love for sale / Appetising young love for sale / Love that's fresh and still unspoiled / Love that's only slightly soiled

Oh yes, Bon Jovi have another song by that title. And Ace of Base have yet another, although I can't remember how that goes.

I have the jazz standard if you can work that into your mix and a reply 5 days late isn't too late. It's not quite the thank you card I meant to send you after my visit in 2003, but it's a start, perhaps? ;-)

Enjoy making your mix!
