Hey, a couple of random questions for folks who have been moving recently, which is, I think, like half the population, as far as I can tell:

1. If you have different people loading and unloading, do you tip them both at the end of packing the truck and at the end of unpacking, or just the folks who unpack? And how much?

2. How do you label a Box of CDs and DVDs, which is, well, also known as Box of Highly Portable Valuables? I want to be able to find it easily and reload it back into the entertainment center, obviously, but I don't want it to shout "Hey, Steal Me!" Or am I being too untrusting?

3. Re: foodstuffs - okay to keep things like kosher salt and so forth? What about cans?

I don't see why you can't keep the salt. As for cans, though, those are heavy, and I would just donate them to a local food bank if I were you. You can easily replace those when you get there.

Just my $.02.

1. No idea. Our cross-country move was all-volunteer labor.
2. I see no reason not to relabel, and it might be fun to come up with the most unappealing-to-steal label ever. Say, for instance, "Cleaning supplies". Or better yet, "Sex toys".
3. For everything, I would consider a cost/weight ratio, for everything, not just food. You are paying by weight, right? (Cubic foot movers are notorious scams.) So I'd say anything that costs less than $1/lb shouldn't move--canned food, salt, large bottles of liquid stuff like laundry detergent.

I would tell you what I put on that box, but then [livejournal.com profile] ladybird97 and [livejournal.com profile] oelker would start laughing at me again.

Oh, what the heck, they will anyway... "Variegated optical media".

Yeah, yeah, I'm a gigantic dork. :-P

I have also produced boxes labeled "arguably breakable" and "bric-a-brac" in my recent career as a serial mover—I tend to get kind of punchy when I've been packing for a while. Though since the CD/DVD box contained both my LotR DVDs and my Star Trek 2 Special Edition DVD, it has been argued that I should simply have labeled it "Geek Cred" and left it at that.

For long distance moves, I discovered that food, for the most part, is not worth it cost/weight wise. I mean, really expensive spices probably, but most stuff, ultimately not worth it, this putting aside the trouble of having to pach these thigns really carefully so they don't get crushed. Cans are really not worth it.

Given that you're going with Wheaton, whose a reputable national company, I'd label things accurately because they simply aren't going to steal things. That said,t o be really paranoid just put a number on every box, and then create a key whcih you print out and bring with you. Then no one without the key knows what's in anything.

1. It probably wouldn't hurt, particularly since they're different people. One tip that's always useful is having soda/water/lemonade available for the movers. They always like that.

2. That's what insuring all your stuff is for :) You can also label them "FRAGILE" and "LIVING ROOM" depending. I'd be more worried about stuff getting broken than getting stolen.

3. I'm with the others. Not worth moving most of that stuff.

PS no idea how much to tip.

I didn't tip; I didn't pay for the move, I wasn't going to tip, whatever the hell the rule is, cuz I hadn't the money. This didn't seem to be a problem. I made sure they knew where the bathroom was and made sure there was ice water available; had meant to get juice or Cokes but didn't get the chance.

That having been said, I did not get any packing and unpacking help; that takes longer and might make a difference.

Also: I got a guaranteed estimate, so if you did NOT get that and they will be weighing the truck before and after loading your stuff, don't bother with anything that's not an expensive spice. Salt and cans will survive a move just fine but they're not worth the weight.

I gotta think some more before posting: maybe you should ask [livejournal.com profile] karakara98 about tipping the movers? I know she had packing service as well as loading.

I didn't tip the movers, I didn't even think about tipping the movers. *hangs head in shame* I'm sooo clueless when it comes to when I should and should not tip! As with Oelker, I did offer them water and let them know where the bathroom was.

As for the cd's/dvd's stuff, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand you probably really do have to worry more about breakage than about theft, but on the other, why tempt fate? My recent move went pretty smoothly, but from my multitudinous moves as a child, my take home lesson was that movers break your toys. My movers told me that I should move anything worth more than $100/lb (art, jewelry, etc.) myself. Things like that really cool unicorn head you have, you should consider what other options are available.

As for the food--I was billed based on the estimate. They didn't weigh my stuff in or out to see how much it varied from the estimate. So if you already have a price locked in, why not take what you want? I made them move cans, etc. They just wouldn't take frozen food or plants.

Hope this helps!
