Well, I've officially introduced myself as Professor Strong to my students, and they mostly seemed to believe me. :)

Highlights of the Day:

At lunch, meeting a poli sci professor who said she had met me before - when I was 10. Ah, the highs and lows of faculty brathood. At least my parents were both respected in their fields.

Bureaucratic mishaps in Latin, resulting in my class having 5 students and my fellow Intro-Latin prof having 20 students. No good solution is imminent.

An awesome first Gender and Sex class, in which I got about 80% (25/~30) of the students to comment or ask a question at some point during the discussion. Breaking critical mass is a great feeling. The students seem like a smart, enthusiastic bunch, as well.

Rome on HBO, btw, isn't half bad, at least if you're an innate fan of the material. For anyone who's been watching it and wants translations of the frequently appearing graffiti, let me know. For the record, "Atia amat omnes" and "Atia fellat omnes" means "Atia (one of the characters) loves everyone" and "Atia sucks everyone."

Off to the Second Day.

Yay! I'm glad it went well. How did your students react to the articles you posted yesterday?

We didn't discuss them in much detail, cuz there was too much else to talk about - I think I'll bring them up again as they relate to the subject matter. But they seemed startled, and it certainly sent some wheels turning. Meanwhile, the Women's Classical Caucus email list has been churning massively discussing the Yale survey article.
