Getting scared...

"There is no way the United States can be this incompetent. The chaos here has to be at least partly deliberate." --Iraqi psychiatrist, voicing an apparently common opinion, via www.juancole.com. Juan Cole is a University of Michigan professor, specializing in Middle Eastern politics and religion.. He knows an awful lot about the internal dynamics of Iraq right now, and isn't optimistic.

I think the weekend's events may be the start of a new multi-front war in Iraq. This terrifies me. We don't have enough troops in Iraq to pacify the whole populace, and we can't get any more troops easily. Land war in Asia Minor, anyone?

Thanks oelker1 - my mistake. Huh- I still feel like I heard about Juan Cole from Joel...

Joel's advisor was Juan Linz, as far as I know. Frighteningly sharp old guy. Loved his class, even though it required no readings, no papers, just a lot of notetaking (while deciphering his accent) and an exam.

I wouldn't be surprised if you head heard about Cole from Joel, their interests certainly intersect. I've never heard of the guy before now, myself, but he sounds sharp.
