Step forward or backward for feminism...

For a long time, men have tried to keep women out of the military (and the vote) on the grounds that we were too soft, too compassionate, too nice for warfare and brutality. Now it turns out that the Brigadier General in charge of Abu Ghraibprison is a woman, as is at least one of the people shown in the shots sexually humiliating and assaulting Iraqi prisoners. Guess that myth has been dispelled. As someone who largely believes that gender differentiation leads to sexism, I suppose that's a good thing. But...I wanted to think that we had been socialized to be more moral and gentle, in some part of me. I feel let down, and I don't think this will do good things for the cause of women in the military, either.

I like to believe that while we can be as ungentle as men, we average a higher degree of sense. Which is a sexist thought, but I'm still sad to see it dispelled. And yer darn right it won't do good things for the cause of women in the military. *sigh*

What happened to professional military conduct? I ask you.
