Anthony Bourdain on how to find good restaurants:

Provoke the nerds: "#2 showed a remarkably precise understanding of the internet. The question at hand was how to find good restaurants, and Bourdain's answer was to take the city you want to go to and just google up some restaurant names that serve the dish you're after. Then got to chowhound or another foodie site, and rather than asking about restaurants, you put up an enthusiastic post talking about how you just had the best whatever you're looking for at one of these restaurants.

At that point, what [livejournal.com profile] drivingblind likes to call the nerdfury will begin. Posters will show up from nowhere to shower you with disdain, tell you how that place used to be good but has now totally sold out and - most important to your quest - will tell you where you would have gone if you were not some sort of mouth breathing water buffalo."

This is brilliant. I think [livejournal.com profile] r_ness should try it. :)

A friend of mine had a technically paid* gig reviewing restaurants for a while, and she definitely used Chowhound discussions to pre-screen places and figure out which were worth reviewing. (Her editor wanted reviews of places that could be favorably recommended.) So this actually works. Someone once sent in a fan-comic to the World of Warcraft site citing the same principle.

*- By technically paid, we mean that there wasn't an expense account and the actual pay wasn't enough to cover the actual cost of eating out to write the reviews. But hey, getting one's work out there is a good thing, I've got fingers crossed for her finding work elsewhere down the line.

That's really a very brilliant assessment of human internet behavior.

Also, I love that song. Easily my favorite song off the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, though the Wynonna "Burnin' Love" is good too.

Fish in a barrel, really. :)

More seriously, it's usually unnecessary to provoke anyone, as it's generally true that any given time there's a nerdfury in progress on most any subject you're interested in.

That is full of win. I love it!
