is the fourth most popular video on Youtube.

It's really a brilliant - and policy-specific - speech. He has this wonderful metaphor that we are the Joshua Generation - the ones who can build the promised land after the initial path has been taken by Moses and Miriam and Aaron. The implicit comparison is that the Boomer Generation made the greater leaps and greater sacrifices, but is too caught up in old struggles and mistakes to build the new Jerusalem. It's a very clever way of using Judeo-Christian imagery and honoring the civil rights movement while simultaneously arguing for new leadership and a new beginning.

He's a good preacher - and he's very, very smart.

EDIT: For those who have read the transcript online - that's just the short version that was released by the Obama campaign. It's like 1/5th of the speech, and the rest is way better. Watch the whole thing - seriously.

Thank you for posting this! I was going to, but you beat me to it. :) I love having watched this the day after watching a documentary on MLK- I get a lot more of the linguistic allusions than I would have otherwise. I also love that he's still pushing the envelope, calling the community on intolerance toward gays and immigrants, even though it would be much safer for him not to go there.

Yes! I read the transcript of this, and was just hugely impressed. I should watch/listen to it too, because I want to hear the rhythm of his voice in this speech - reading it, it felt like he was picking up on some of MLK's preacher qualities, in the way he structured things.

Thank you for posting this!
