Dude, the whole Spitzer scandal totally sucks for New York and his family, but it's paying off in awesome research dividends for me as everyone publishes articles on the escort industry and whether prostitution should be legalized.

"Dangle Your Own Carrot" is a horrific new slogan for Careerbuilder.com. What about those of us who don't have carrots?

Mac is again playing the Ugly American, assuming that my denial of a request means simply a failure in communication and he needs to escalate. In this case, saying he couldn't take a bath right after breakfast led to the response of him stripping down to the buff.

We had a fun impromptu dinner/hangout on Thursday with [livejournal.com profile] r_ness, [livejournal.com profile] resonance42, and [livejournal.com profile] bloodstones. I made two new recipes, a garlic herb bread which had a great tang although a poor crust, and chocolate peanut butter two-layer brownies, which were very tasty and fairly easy although more on the cakey end of things, despite my melting the butter and all the chocolate. I think one of my big mistakes here came in the stage of dividing the batter equally into two bowls; I wound up with about 2/3rds peanut-butter chocolate layer to 1/3rd super chocolate layer, because I'm bad at eyeballing fractions like that.

On the celebration of St. Patrick's Day today here in Chicago:

1. It feels wrong to see a 4-year-old girl waving a flag labeled "Jamison Irish Whiskey."

2. Well, they really did dye the Chicago river green. We were there. It's actually fairly disturbing, though, because it winds up reminding me less of Ireland and more of the nasty chemical spills in Tim Burton Batman movies. Speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] cerebralpaladin's office building is going to be Gotham City Hall this summer! Given my .5 second appearance in _Spiderman_, all we really need is a random cameo in Superman and we're totally superextras. :)

3. Lots of people were wearing green O'Bama shirts.

Actually, the Spitzer thing is great for New York. Paterson is awesome (he has taken strong positions against police misconduct, against the death penalty, and in favor of marriage for same-sex couples, to name a few . . .). So awesome that he would probably never get elected, but he is very well liked and respected in Albany and there is much speculation that he will be met with more cooperation than usual because of this scandal, and also because people like him. In contrast, Spitzer wasn't living up to his campaign promise in the least. So . . . a bad way for it to happen, but a good result. I agree with all the rest, though.

I don't get what's so bad about the "dangle your own carrot" slogan. Doesn't that simply translate to "be self-motivated"?

Um, I saw a lot of innuendo in it. Maybe I just have a dirty mind?

I'm with you! Maybe we both have dirty minds.

well, given what you work on, isn't a dirty mind kind of an academic qualification?
*grin*

I'm hoping most Americans. however ugly, don't strip down to the buff as a way of dealing with refused requests. :) It seems pretty extreme.

The pic of the green Chicago river is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. Here's hoping it was some kind of rapidly-degrading dye.

Well yes. General principle /= specific response.

You were in Spider-Man?

At the beginning of the film, there's a scene where they're visiting a lab at Columbia, and they go up the huge white steps at Columbia. On the upper left-hand side of the stairs, there's a woman walking up away from the camera, back turned, with long curly red hair, in the background, for about .5 seconds. I'm pretty sure that's me; I was there on the day of filming and wearing that outfit.

Wow, I'm surprised you didn't have to sign something for that. I'll have to look for it the next time I watch that movie.

There was a giant posterboard at the front of all the campus gates that day, informing us that by walking onto campus, we signed a contract giving away our image rights to Paramount(I think?). It was a bit unnerving actually - going to class meant consenting to be in Spiderman....
