Why we Need History...and/or Truthful Politicians

So, a Republican congressional candidate in Indiana claims that he didn't realize that the event he attended last weekend was a Nazi rally.

Take a look at the picture. It was a meeting in celebration of Hitler's birthday.

Money quote: "He pointed out the name isn't Nazi, but National Socialist Workers Party."

Nono, I think THIS is the money quote:

"When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn't know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it."

He doesn't know enough about the Nazis to either favor or oppose.

In my world, he gets disqualified merely on grounds of stupidity.

Oh, that was on the most recent Wait, Wait! I think they said that the Republican party has disowned the guy. I'm reminded of the recent -chat discussion about types of laughs. My officemate and I have cycled through incredulous, mocking, rueful, uncomfortable, hollow, and hysterical at least.

Yeah...I certainly would if I were the local Republicans. But still! If you're going to be a white supremacist neo-Nazi, come out and admit it!

Well, I certainly think he gets the Ollie North award for Brass Cojones for having the nerve to say he didn't realize that neo-nazis were, well, neo-nazis.

What a turd.

Hey, look, let's retain some perspective here. These guys aren't Nazis. They just really like Hitler, swastikas, saying "Seig Heil!", and white supremacy. I really dislike the modern trend to use "Nazi" as an epithet for any group whose politics we don't like. It just cheapens the term, don't you think?

And, you forgot, belonging to the National Socialist Workers Party.

But yeah...I mean, they probably don't even have the right boots!

I think the color of their swastikas might be a bit off.
