The Chicago Tribune published today a guide to 13 different ethnic kinds of doughnuts and where to find good ones in Chicago. It's very interesting from a foodie perspective, but I do feel the need to point out two things:

Take a look at #12, the Long John. Um? I'm just saying, it looks like something made by Nanny Ogg.

I'm not one to mock other people's folklore, but the origin story for #13, the You Tiao chinese doughnut (fritter), is supposedly as follows:
"During the Song dynasty a heroic general was framed for murder by a hated prime minister and his wife. The Chinese people were so angry they twisted strands of dough together and fried them--the strands represented the villains. Says Z.J. Tong, president of the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute: "The people, they didn't dare speak up, so this was their revenge in a way."

Because when I want justice, I...eat fried foods! That'll show them! Ha, I say!

Mac's sentence of the day: "How I get cupcakes?"
(There are no cupcakes currently in the house, nor are there plans for cupcakes.)

I WANT A DONUT NOW.

The Latin names of those donuts are really cheering me up. I love French krullers, I do I do I do...... want....

It's funny cuz I will seek out donuts of many of these ethnicities! I went a little nuts with the Packi this winter, I get French krullers when I have an excuse, and I have actually made beignets for school before. I frequently default to the good old glazed, though.

Wow. That's even keener than the silent walk protesting we heard about in Shanghai.

Ooo, donuts!

Mmmmmm paczki. (It's pronounced a little more like "ponch-key" - they missed the diacritical mark under the a)
My godmother used to bring them when she visited. The prune filling is surprisingly good.

Reminds me of hamentaschen. (Ha ha! We beat you! Now we make fun of you with food!) But as a result it doesn't seem so strange.

Yes, but there's a difference between ha ha we beat you and "we have no chance of achieving actual justice here, so we will seethe with our doughnuts quietly."

Well, then, the question is valid, isn't it? He sees no cupcakes! He wants to know how he gets them! :)

Yes, but the only answer is the disheartening, "You don't."

We're a little more concerned about his venture into editorial commentary. Upon reading the page in "Sheep in a Jeep" where "Sheep Don't Think to Look Up Front," Mac commented "Sheep is Stupid." Which, well, is true, but I'd rather he not be so judgmental at such an early age...:)

See, that kind of response is why I regret not getting to be an Indulgent/Amused Aunt first. :)

I'm just amazed that you don't accidentally have Mac saying things like "I can haz cupcakez?" *grin*
