Heroine of the Day

Jewel Van Valin, a Delta flight attendant, gives crayons and paper to all her flyers, saves all the art, and posts it on the bulkhead so everyone can see them as they're leaving the plane and then puts up especially good pieces in the employees' lounge.

The world needs more cool acts of productive creativity. I hope someday I get to ride on her plane.

That's adorable!

I once ended up playing hearts across an airplane aisle for several hours with a diverse group of strangers on a flight to China. It was me (then a high school student), a Malaysian businessman, a Midwestern woman on her way to adopt a baby, and a young German guy. We had some really fun conversation. At the time, I had no idea how unusual that kind of thing is.

I've never played hearts with anyone but my family on planes, but I do talk to strangers on planes a lot. I guess southerners are like that.

This is a really cool idea. More flight attendants should do stuff like it.

Everyone has these horror stories about chatty strangers on planes, but I've had nothing but fun experiences. I once had this great conversation about blueberries with one of the editorial board members of Martha Stewart's magazine. Not sure why she was flying coach!

Woot! I am a horror story! lol.

I was once studying for my quals on a plane, poring over this gigantic Bible-like tome of harmonic analysis. Usually, this causes strangers to either avoid me or ask me to help with their Algebra I homework, or else I get subjected to all the reasons they hated math in school. But this time, the guy looked at the book and said "Oh, Stein--what do you think of it?" and when he found out I was a math grad student, he gave me his business card. He was some kind of finance guy, and he said that if I ever decided to give up on academia I should call him.

Oh dear, I'm sorry, that's not what I meant! You'd be one of the good chatting stories! :)

And that's so funny. It's like the math secret handshake.

I want to ride on her plane, too!

...

That wasn't supposed to sound that dirty.
