Del Martin, the first woman to be legally married to another woman in California, died today at the age of 87. Her marriage to her beloved wife Phyllis Lyon lasted for 72 days, solemnizing a love that stretched for more than fifty years.

Ms. Martin and Ms. Lyon formed the first national lesbian organization in the U.S., the Daughters of Bilitis, a group which focused on working for toleration of homosexuals by the larger community. She was also an early leader of NOW and of the feminist movement, the medical marijuana movement, and the quest for affordable, non-judgmental health care.

I honor her memory, and grieve for her widow. Thanks be to God and the California Supreme Court that she gained her wish to die a married woman.

That mad me sad, too. But I was glad she got to get legally married first (as it was her dream).

That is so sad, and so wonderful at the same time. I'm grateful that she was able to see her wish.

Seeing the pictures of them getting married made me cry.

That's sad. :( I wish she got to enjoy married life a little longer, after working so hard and so long to achieve it. But she _did_ achieve it, and that's pretty wonderful.
