orichalcum at 11:35pm on 27/08/2008Del Martin, the first woman to be legally married to another woman in California, died today at the age of 87. Her marriage to her beloved wife Phyllis Lyon lasted for 72 days, solemnizing a love that stretched for more than fifty years.
Ms. Martin and Ms. Lyon formed the first national lesbian organization in the U.S., the Daughters of Bilitis, a group which focused on working for toleration of homosexuals by the larger community. She was also an early leader of NOW and of the feminist movement, the medical marijuana movement, and the quest for affordable, non-judgmental health care.
I honor her memory, and grieve for her widow. Thanks be to God and the California Supreme Court that she gained her wish to die a married woman.
