On the subject of earworms....

so, I've recently been reading the YA fantasy book "How to Ditch Your Fairy," by Justine Larbalestier. The central conceit is that most people in the city (vaguely modern Australian/American) have a fairy that gives them a special fairy. Our heroine, for instance, has a parking-space fairy, who always finds the perfect parking space - which sounds good, except that she's 14, hates cars, and is constantly getting dragged along on errands by folks who _do_ want a good parking space. It's not the best novel ever, but it does some nice playing around with language, has a world that is richer around the edges than you get to see (which I always like), and has a female heroine who wants to make the basketball team even more than she wants to get the boy.

One of the other girls in the story has a "all-the-boys-like-you" fairy - again, sounds good, but... As a result, I have gotten Kelis's "Milkshake" stuck on repeat in my head. This is slightly annoying. I feel that it has also contributed to my desire to actually drink a milkshake - which may also be influenced by the fact that the frakking cold has turned into sinusitis, gadzooks, and I think this is connected to a sudden massive return in the nausea, combined (because this makes everything better) with the Hobbit diet, in which I get desperately hungry every two hours for small amounts of food. Basically, the last few days have involved coughing until I vomit, then desperately eating and trying to stave off the next episode, while ignoring the massive ball of pain between my eyebrows. Even my birthday Scharffenberger chocolate failed to help.

I wish I could take Sudafed.

Tomorrow, I teach my sections for the first time. I'm going to show them the "What have the Romans ever done for us?" clip from Monty Python's The Life of Brian, because I can't think of anything that sums up the central question of the course - was ancient imperialism a good thing - better in under a minute.

Presuming my head doesn't explode.
Mood:: 'sick' sick
Music:: Milkshake - Kelis

It sounds like your head cold bring sinusitis to the yard... and damn right, it's worse than yours? Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;)

Feel better soon! *gentle hugs and cups of tea*

I remember the hobbit diet! That sucked. I had to carry food with me everywhere. And I drank a lot of chocolate milk.

Even though I haven't needed to puke in a long time, I had a coughing fit two days ago that did it. I think the "puke threshold" is permanently lowered after the first trimester.

Yikes. *hug*. Coffee often helps clearing the sinuses, and I think you can have a little while pregnant with few worries. Or you could try something spicy like hot and sour soup.

As far as earworms go, my last big one came during late Hannukah, when the Jewel down the street (a grocery store for those who unlike Ori have not lived in IL) was playing "Light the Menorah". Gentile that I am, I'm not terribly familiar with it and don't have a quick memory for most music, but it's catchy enough. So when I leave the store, it gets garbled in my head into the far more familiar "Korobeiniki", i.e. Tetris music, which stuck in my head all the way home.

HUGS! Oh, sweetie, that sounds awful. I'll send you a no-puking fairy...

But on the good side, I still think you're a total genius for showing that scene from Life of Brian :) And your students will too!

I hope you feel better soon! In the meantime, what do you think of this t-shirt?

I'm not sure how this happened, but for some reason whenever I hear "Milkshake" I get a very vivid image in my head of Brave Sir Robin's musical entourage performing the accompaniment. It's...strange.

We just got "How to Ditch Your Fairy" at work (we have a new and improved system for including fun books among our new books), so that's what i'm going to try as soon as possible, thanks to your rec!

ASAP equals after I finish all these writing projects and after I finish The Host, which my officemate SWEARS I will love even though she doesn't even understand half the reasons I will probably love it! ... I love my officemate.

I think you'll really like Fairy, actually, although you may want to shake the heroine occasionally.
