This is a terrific post about how photos in newspapers unconsciously shape and structure our opinions of other nations and other cultures. If I was teaching something at all relevant, I'd make my students look at it. As it is, I highly encourage you to take a glance at these two photos of the same cultural event.

Oh, we're back from PV; things are good, and Mac seems to only have noticed our absence in that he didn't throw any temper tantrums till we got back. But he likes his new helicopter puzzle from Mexico.

That was fascinating! This is also why you'll see those of us in the size acceptance movement decrying the "headless fatty" video or photo you often see accompanying an "OMG THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC" article. Keep showing fat people with no identity & eventually the viewing public assumes fat people don't get identities.

thanks for posting the link. short yet amazingly effective way to make a point. i sent it on to our world religions prof, who was lamenting having a hard time making headway teaching islam to texas seminary students, esp the former gi's now pastors-in-training...

thanks, yes, very interesting article. Reminded me immediately of post-Katrina coverage and this little gem:

Though of course the issue here is with captioning, tacked onto photographic presentation of the same event...

Does Eowyn need some playtime? We're home all day and I can send Michael over to get her.

If Finn wants it, sure, although she's been enjoying quietly cuddling with us today and had a good walk with her Granddad this morning. I'm sure she'd enjoy it, but if M. doesn't want to deal, no worries.
