Ok, I wasn't in favor of the whole Blue-State-Secession movement at all, but if they're going to preemptively attack us by strafing our elementary schools, we may need to rethink this. As someone said, it gives a whole new meaning to "No Child Left Behind."

Poor New Jersey. If only they _had_ actually voted for Bush, maybe they'd be safe today. San Francisco, watch out...

Remember how I was so excited about that campground in the Pine Barrens where the military planes practice over head?

It's near there.

Needless to say, I emailed this item to my mom, wondering why Little Egg Harbor hasn't already been on NJ Air Guard's case for doing flyovers. Ohio Air Guard has big maps with crossed out areas so they don't fly over nursing homes and hospitals... and our neighbor's farm. Because they used to fly C130s over her pasture, and her cows broke so many fences with their little stampedes that she harassed the Air Guard by telephone until they put her farm on the nofly list. Maybe we should give her number to the people of Little Egg Harbor, so she can give lessons.

What gets me is that the pilot missed his target 3.5 _miles_ away. This does not give me confidence in the ability of the National Guard to protect me.

What the hell is the military doing practicing bombing maneuvers anywhere near a school? That's what deserts are for. They should take a lesson from the British, who put one of their firing ranges on the Pembrokeshire coast, miles away from anything at all. You have to drive through empty fields for more than half an hour to even get to the gate.

If you read the article, it mentions slug holes in the ceilings and _floors_ of multiple classrooms, which means that if this had happened during school hours, the chances of horrific casualties would have been pretty high.

That target range IS nearly that far away from anything. I think they just have to make loops.

It's also a good thing none of the cleaning staff were hit by any of those 20mm shells. What really amazes me is that the rounds were three miles off target.

I'm thinking that's an automatic failing grade on the exam...

Well, note that he wasn't actually shooting at the target he was planning to hit—he screwed up (badly) and hit the trigger when he was 2000 feet higher up than he should have been, and presumably not flying in remotely the right direction. And yes, if you fire a high-velocity (and moderately massive) object in the wrong direction from a mile up, it will land several miles from where you meant it to. Still a big-ole black mark, but more on his fitness for combat duty in general than his marksmanship, I'd say.

My understanding is that he was on his approach turn and accidentally fired. Hitting the firing button on the big 'ol rotary cannon when you're not supposed to is a serious no-no. :)

However, marksmanship isn't just about hitting things you're supposed to, but also not hitting things you're not supposed to. Schools are high on the list in the second category. :)

I think the word I really wanted was "impresses" as opposed to "amazes". Four ounce 20mm cannon shells fired from an electric Gatling gun go damn far.

In that case, we are in complete agreement. :-)
