So, one of my projects today, cuz it's important, is looking at Evanston real estate. Now, this isn't going to be hugely cheap. But all the same, it's hard not to whimper in relieved shock when, _for the same price_ as our current noisy, bugs-in-the-walls, dilapidated small 1-bedroom in NYC, I see an ad like this:

EVANSTON Coach House. 3BR, 1BA, DR, LR, hrdwd flrs, remod. & sunny. On 1 acre estate. Incl prkng/lndry. $1650.+utils. 847-475-7973

The amusing thing about Evanston real estate is that many of the single-family homes are former coach houses or servant quarters for the gorgeous turn-of-the-century summer mansions by the lake. So they're nice but small buildings next to these lofty castle-like structures. If only we had 10 million dollars to spare...

I remember when I was looking at grad schools in Chicago (Northwestern being one of them), and I was asking about rental prices and such, I had to explain realtor's fees to people. And they were shocked. Despite being a big city, Chicago seemed downright cheap compared to what I am used to in Boston.
