Names My Children Will Not Have

Upon editing my bibliography and footnotes, I have come up with a list of first names I will _not_ be giving my kids (though they may show up in an RPG someday):

Ortwin
Dwora
Claudine
Helmut
Fikret

OTOH, Emiel, Luciana, Kerill, and Severin are kinda cool

Other names...

I watch out for names like that, too, especially in the Bible. My favorite name that I won't use is "Tzlophechad," though "Mushi" is way up there, too.

"Emiel" is interesting. I have heard of the name "Amiel," but this is a new variation. I wonder about its origins. If it's Hebrew, it could mean "G-d is my mother" or "my mother is of G-d," (em = mother, -i = my, El = G-d), paralleling the name "Aviel," which may mean "G-d is my father" (in a spiritual sense, not a physical one, obviously). Do you know if this Emiel is a woman?

No clue, but Emiel is Israeli, I believe, judging by press.

If it's Hebrew, Emiel could just be a different transliteration of Amiel. Same name, different spellings.

Hey, what's wrong with Claudine?

Now Dwora, that's a little odd. Mistake for/evolution of Dvora, I guess?

I think some or all of those names might be found in my family tree somewhere. Helmut for sure, and I'm pretty sure there was a Claudine, too.

I'm not saying they were always bad names...

Just that some names weren't meant to be perpetuated in the 21st century. I loved my Great-Aunt Gertrude, but I'm not naming anyone after her...

Claudine just doesn't work for me, can't tell you why.

My mother's name is "Gatewood"... :)
