So, I'm not saying I'm right...

but there's a former Headmaster of Hogwarts named Fortescue, who has a portrait, and Florean Fortescue helps Harry out with all of his essays on medieval wizardry in P'Azkaban, as well as giving him a free sundae every half-hour. (How the kid remained so thin is unclear.)

So maybe he does have some more significant knowledge or background than it first appears.

Ohh. Very interesting. I had forgotten about the headmaster named Fortescue.

So I agree with you on the Snape thing, I suspect that the conversation Hagrid overheard was Snape telling Dumbledore he has reservations about killing him. Which lends credence to Dumbledore pleading with Snape to kill him. I'm not certain that Dumbledore won't come back either, perhaps Snape (who can cast spells mentally) used a fake death spell, but my bets 50-50 at best on that one.

I think, incident, that it is entirely likely that Dumbledore's rock solid faith in Snape is that Snape made an Unbreakable Vow to him.

I also think this is the case. OTOH, I'm also intrigued by contrariety's Not-Dumbledore or Controlled-Dumbledore theory, which she may explicate later.

Having heard this theory, I strongly believe that it is pretty much on crack. But you should hear her explain it.

I haven't even heard it, but I think it's on crack. Any variation of Not-Dumbledore cheapens the emotional impact of the ending.

I do, however, quite like the idea that Snape made an Unbreakable Vow to Dumbledore. And I'm certainly on the Dumbledore may return/Snape was being loyal theory. For the first, well, there's just way the hell too much phoenix imagery associated with that man for me to believe that he's really dead. And for the second... there was never a satisfying explanation for Snape's "betrayal". If Snape really did turn to the Dark Side and that's the end of it, it was about the least dramatically compelling choice I've ever seen. I can't believe J.K. would muff that up so badly.

So, it's mostly that a bunch of us think that Dumbledore was acting remarkably out-of-character in the last section of the book, and that there were several things which didn't make any sense, like the boat which doesn't count Harry as a wizard even though it measures magical power, Ddore's wearing of the Evil Ring, and the "KILL ME" scene.

One explanation, the most interesting one, is that Ddore was being Influenced by the bit of Voldiesoul in the Ring.
