I can't remember the last time I had an alternate-universe dream. But I woke up this morning from a very vivid dream in which I was a lawyer at a small firm in the West Village in NYC. I brought Eowyn to work every day to lie at my feet, next to my husband's desk. My husband, a totally imaginary guy, was a nice, decent guy who I loved and who clearly cared a lot about me; he was a lawyer at the same firm. At the same time, I found myself thinking that if I needed to move for work reasons in a few years, I wasn't sure the marriage would last the move. Someone was passing around invitations for a firm "Historical Figures of England" costume party, at which I had been assigned to play Richard III. Then my friend Irene came in to ask for advice about whether or not she should try for a "dead-end U.S. Attorney" job in Idaho, and I told her she should ask A. for advice.
I'm not sure what this dream was trying to tell me. Perhaps that, despite the crazy job market in my field and the intense stress it creates, I'm better off doing something I love than something more stable but less interesting to me. Perhaps, similarly, it was reminding me how lucky I am to be married to someone who, while occasionally exasperating, is never dull. Perhaps it was a dream about how much I love our puppy. Anyways, very odd.
