Well, we just had our first official moving estimate, from the reliable people, the ones who were supposed to give us a straightforward quote and mean that we could cross this item off our list before going on vacation for two weeks.

And, well, the quote they gave us was for 5K.

Northwestern will reimburse the first $1000.

Frantically calling other moving companies...

In other news, particularly for [livejournal.com profile] retsuko, how precisely does one approximately correctly tie an obi?

*hug* I hope you can find something better soon!

Have you heard of these guys?

I don't know the relative cost, or if you have space for one, but since you do the item moving yourselves, it might be a lot cheaper.

Due to the wedding china and stuff, we really want movers who will pack the delicate stuff properly. Hence the difficulty and expense.

I _hate_ moving.

I was charged 2.3K for packing it myself and with only insurance for $.60 per lb, which is of course a fraction of the total value. That quote may be because of insurance, distance, and high because it's peak season and gas costs are up. If you got a binding quote, it may be high because there's a certain minimum pounds your company will move and because they quote high when giving a binding quote because they want to make sure they charge enough to make a profit. What's the national company your guys were an agent of? I would try local agents of national companies like Allied, North American, Mayflower (they have a 5000 lb minimum tho), United, etc. I'll find you the list of national companies I considered, when I get home, okay?

I went with my local Allied agent; the quote was higher than United expected to quote me, but Allied gave a binding quote and that's important, especially if you have to have a check or credit card available to them at delivery.

They were agents of Atlas. Your list will be much appreciated. Thanks.
The big expense seems to be that they need a shuttle small truck to get in and out of Manhattan, and then reload it from their warehouse onto a larger truck. It's the Manhattan surcharge, more or less.

That quote makes sense.

Oh yeah, and re: obi: we did one on my halloween costume last year. Between an internet search and N., managed to get it done, so I recommend searching around for it; there were diagrams and such.

Hmm, yeah, it cost over $1000 to move monkeygod and I 10 blocks, and we packed our own stuff. I do hope you find something better!, but $5K sounds about right given the packing and the distance...

There are books you can get on how to tie an obi, but as [livejournal.com profile] apintrix says above, there are probably some good web sites that will provide you with said information. The book I'm thinking of is entitled something like, The Art of Wearing a Kimono, and contains some basic obi ties. You can get super crazy with them, if you want to. (Mrs. Doi did mine with an orchid tie that was very graceful, and she was a *liscensed obi tier*. I think I know what I want to be when I grow up. *grins*) Since they used to denote marital status, as well as social status (to a lesser degree), they can get very ornate.

Yikes on the 5K! D's and my plan to send our stuff down to SD doesn't sound as good as it did before I checked my LJ. :(

i know this is a weird suggestion, but...if either of you have any relatives who are ministers or priests, there are certain moving companies that give really low rates for moving 'church' folk. i got down from philly to durham on $1700 (my own packing, but including a piano) because my grandfather as a lutheran minister gave the impression i was his daughter to some moving company that specializes in protestants...

i will say that the quote seems kinda high, since 5k is what Stanford would have alloted me to move from Madrid to California, had I gone.
