OK, not quite mindless. Things to amuse you on a Friday.

Next season will be the last for Battlestar Galactica. I wish I was more upset about this, but really, I'd much rather they go out with a bang than continue to have episodes of vague whimpering.

For any fans of gaze theory, or even just Western art, this is really cool, and kinda hypnotic to watch. Maybe beauty is constant?

So amazingly geeky, yet so cool. Like Peanut Butter and Jelly, it's Muppets meets LOTR.

In 2009, there's going to be a Harry Potter Theme Park as part of Universal Florida! This might actually get me to go theme-parking someday, if it's cool.

Re: BSG - Yeah, I'm with you. Better to end now than to risk the ratio of bad episodes to good getting worse and worse. And [cryptic so as to spare spoilers] maybe that last line of Season 3 was the whole truth after all - that would point to an ending for the series...

That video of the morphing women's faces was very interesting; I wish I could have shown it to my Humanities students. It would have made for some great discussion. I find it especially interesting that so few of the women open their mouths, or look directly at the viewer.

I suppose I would visit a Harry Potter theme park... if they had a Quidditch simulation game. And a Whack-a-Voldermort game. ;-D

Yeah, I noticed that too. There seemed to be remarkable similarities of expression and of facial features - enough that I found it a little disturbing, given the far wider range of actual women.

While I agree that the art thing was cool, I also agree with the people who are bothered by it. A short list of objections would include the constantly tilted heads, the uniform facial expressions, the standard face shape, and the fixed skin tone.

Oh yes. Had I not been trying at the time to prevent your nephew from eating dog food, I would have clarified the "cool" as meaning - "interesting and well done, but also disturbing and provocative." While the video artist clearly picked and chose his portraits carefully, I don't think they're especially unrepresentative of Western art, unfortunately. It would have been nice to have some of Gauguin's Tahitians (not that there isn't massive colonialism there) or Picasso's less attractive models, at least, not to mention some of Rubens and Fragonard's more voluptuous women.
